“Wanting to approach birth work from a community oriented lens, I was drawn to Davinah’s values and connected with her sense of humor. Throughout our mentorship, she offered space for reflection and was a soundboard when I needed to navigate my fears. Davinah encouraged me to connect with other birth workers, offered support with structural aspects of starting a business, and provided invaluable opportunities to gain hands-on experience. I witnessed the depth of skillful care she offers clients while also being invited to practice what I’d been learning. It has been an honor to do this work with Davinah and I am so thankful for their support and guidance. No matter where your experience lies, if you value collaboration and experiential learning, I encourage you to mentor with Davinah.” -Jess, Seattle, WA
Mentorship Inquiry
Mentorship is equally important to hands-on and didactic learning as a birth keeper. It is a way to remain accountable to ethics in this work, and is a way to track your growth and learning as you grow in and through your offerings.
My work as a doula is from the lens of being a Black femme who uses this work to heal ancestral trauma and uncover the memories of the time when we were all in the village together. I will ask you to examine your own social location in society and how that impacts the work you do, regularly.
I mentor in a 1:1 model.
